Summer Activities For Kids In The Triad

Whether you have toddlers, preschoolers, or older kids, you know that summer is fun but you can exhaust your self-made list of activities very quickly. As kids are out of school and easily bored, it is good to have a unique list of activities at hand. Kid-Friendly Triad has you covered.

From Greensboro to High Point, & Winston-Salem, the Triad is well-suited for young families, parents, and children alike. The Triad is full of history and is an arts hub so not only do children have many artistic activities to take part in but also parks, playgrounds, museums, and even waterparks that can please any parent who needs to book some summer fun. Below are some wonderful summer activities for kids in the Triad that you can help enrich your child’s life with.

Parks & Playgrounds

If you haven’t been in the area for long, or just haven’t ventured out to see for yourself, you may not know just how many wonderful parks and playgrounds that the Triad has to offer. From parks with a natural feel or right downtown to playgrounds that range from beginner to just plain insane, Winston-Salem and Greensboro have much to offer.

  • If you are looking for parks that have it all, you can try Triad Park in Kernersville (Three playgrounds, rock climbing, picnic shelters, ball fields, volleyball, horseshoe pits, tennis courts and soccer fields, biking and walking trails and ponds for fishing) or Tanglewood Park in Clemmons (Two playgrounds, aquatic center, stables, and riding center, walking trails, dog park, and more). In Greensboro, check out the new Lebauer Park (grassy lawn, dog park, a sensory space to be enjoyed by people who have sensory processing disorders, and interactive fountains) while in High Point, check out City Lake Park (A CAROUSEL, paddle boats, mini-golf, multiple playgrounds, amusement rides, train rides around the lake, and an outdoor swimming pool with water slides)

Fruitful Food Adventures

  • When the summer comes, it is easy to just rely on processed foods and save time and money. But for a great treat and activity, take your kids to a farm and get them involved with picking fresh berries themselves. Below is a list of some of our favorites.

Get Musical

  •  The Music Academy of North Carolina – Music lessons, classes, and even summer camps for children that want to learn how to play a multitude of instruments.
  • Musik Garten Babies – Designed for parents and their babies to take together, these weekly classes help you learn how to play musically with your baby. Each class features bouncing and rocking songs, wiggle and peek-a-boo games, and other fun activities for the two of you.
  • Musik Garten Toddlers – These weekly classes are action-filled for toddlers – full of energy, often on the move, always exploring and learning – and their parents. Together you’ll sing, chant, move, dance, listen, and play simple instruments, all activities that bridge the natural connection between music and movement through four wonder-filled semesters.
  • Musik Garten Preschoolers – Celebrate your preschooler’s growing independence and love of the outdoors with activities involving the four seasons in The Cycle of Seasons. Developed to build attention and self-expression, activities include singing, chanting, moving, focused listening, musical games, exploring musical instruments, creative movement, and storytelling.

Walk On The Wild Side

Young children love animals. The look on a child’s face when they see an exotic animal for the first time, a huge giraffe, or elephant can never be recreated. Fortunately for residents of the NC’s Triad, we have multiple wildlife parks and zoos within driving distance. See a few our favorites below:

Summer Day Trips

  • A great day trip is one of the many zoos and animal exhibits mentioned in the section above.
  • If you have a child who loves trains or giant vehicles, check out the NC Transportation Museum in Salisbury, NC. This family-friendly place is a 60-acre site filled with immersive exhibits and special events. Take a 25-minute train ride, enjoy the museum’s Summer Fun Fridays or Reading On The Railroad.
  • Take a trip to the mountains to Tweetsie Railroad. It is a family-oriented Wild West theme park located between Boone and Blowing Rock, North Carolina, United States. The centerpiece of the park is a 3-mile ride on a train pulled by one of Tweetsie Railroad’s two historic narrow-gauge steam locomotives. The park also features a variety of amusement rides, live shows, a zoo and other attractions geared towards families with children.
  • Two more destinations as you head toward the Raleigh/Durham area are Marbles Kids Museum and The Museum of Life and Science. Both are great for preschool kids!

Turn The Page & Explore

Outdoor activities aren’t the only options for your child this summer. You can also help develop their mind and reading skills by encouraging reading and making it fun. Whether you find great summer reading lists or books to read in your own home or if you visit one of the many local libraries or Barnes & Nobles in the Triad.

Another great resource is the International Literacy Association’s Children’s Choices, Reading List. It is a reading list with a twist, in which children themselves evaluate the books and vote for their favorites. Since 1974, Children’s Choices has been a trusted source of book recommendations used by teachers, librarians, parents, and children themselves.

Indoor Jump and Play

The Triad is well-suited for warm summer temps but your children can definitely use activities that burn out energy and keep them active WHILE keeping cool. Below are some indoor trampoline parks and bounce amusement centers that we love:

Summer Camps

If you are a working parent or just a mom or dad who needs a break from the chaos, then summer camps could be a great option for you. There are summer camps based on activities, arts, sports, music, and more. You can even sign-up for many camps without being a member of a club or organization. Let’s Go to the Movies

If you are looking for a way to escape the heat, make use of a rainy summer day, or catch the latest release for your child’s favorite character, then a summer movie activity is always a great choice. To get an idea of what newly released films are best for your kids or what programs are best to watch on Amazon, Youtube, or Netflix, check out this comprehensive list.
