About Happy Hill Park

Happy Hill is one of Winston-Salem’s oldest African American neighborhoods. Just across the creek from Salem, Happy Hill was originally used by Moravians for farming purposes. When Moravians embraced slavery, Happy Hill was used as a town plantation and slave quarters. In 1814, Dr. Frederich Schumann made his home at Happy Hill and his plantation grew. Eventually, Dr. Schumann emancipated all his enslaved African Americans. Several of them were among the earliest American settlers in Liberia. In its prime, the Happy Hill neighborhood had a skating rink, a theater, a playground, local schools, churches, a nightspot, several small stores, and single-family homes. Now Happy Hill is home to a section of the Salem Creek Greenway, a jogging track, tennis and basketball courts, a splash pad, playground, picnic shelters, and community center.
